American Fine Fragrance: The Story So Far

Fulton & Roark was established in July 2012 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, as an American Fine Fragrance house — a category the company would go on to trademark. The first product line, Solid Fragrance, launched in 2013: wax-based, refillable, shatterproof, and built to travel in a pocket rather than sit on a shelf. At a time when cologne meant a bottle, Fulton & Roark built something that had never really existed before. It sold first through boutique and independent retail, the kind of stores that notice when something is actually different.

Where the names come from

Every Fulton & Roark fragrance is named for a real American place with a personal meaning behind it — a naming system the house has run since day one, starting with its own name. Fulton is for Fulton County, Georgia. Roark is for Roark's Cove, a stretch of road in Sewanee, Tennessee, ridden thousands of times on a bike. Both places have since come full circle as fragrances in their own right: Fulton, an homage to Atlanta, and Roark's Cove, part of the core collection today. The system that names every scent in the library started with the company's own name.

From two noses to a house of them

For the first years, the house's founders worked as the noses behind the earliest fragrances themselves. Between 2013 and 2023, Fulton & Roark grew from that founder-led perfumery into a house working with some of the industry's top noses, including Dana Schmitt, Hamid Merati-Kashani, Clement Gavarry, and Frank Voelkl. Direct-to-consumer grew into a major piece of the business over the same stretch, and the range widened beyond fragrance into the products built around the same place-named scent library: deodorant, multi-use oil, bar soap, and sets.

The Extrait era

2023 marked the turn. Fulton & Roark launched its Extrait de Parfum line — 25 to 30% fragrance concentration, priced around $225 — and it quickly became the core of the company. The line's arrival opened doors that hadn't opened before: Fulton & Roark launched into select Neiman Marcus stores in 2025 and select Saks stores in 2026, moving the house from independent retail into the country's most storied department store floors in just over a decade.
